Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Red Mites & Biocide-Free Solutions

Here you'll find answers about Red Mites and our biocide-free products from Tiergesundheit Emsland: ADELE Milbenfrei® (quick reduction) and GUSTAV Milbenstopp® (long-term barrier). Both are bio-oriented, biocide-free and applicable in occupied coops.

1. What are Red Mites & how do I recognize an infestation?

Red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) are blood-sucking parasites. During the day, they hide in cracks and crevices; at night, they infest the animals. Typical signs: restless chickens, pale comb, blood traces on perches or eggs.

2. How does ADELE Milbenfrei® work?

ADELE Milbenfrei® is sprayed directly onto infested hotspots/nests. ADELE Milbenfrei® works by clogging the mites' breathing pores, forming a fine film that instantly suffocates the mites and damages the nits. The application should be repeated after approx. 4 - 12 days, depending on the temperature. Afterward, depending on the infestation.

3. Application: How do I apply ADELE Milbenfrei® correctly?

Shake the canister well, pour into a hand sprayer or backpack sprayer. Spray all infested areas / hotspots / nests directly. ADELE is biocide-free, instantly effective, and can be used in occupied coops.

4. Application: How do I apply GUSTAV Milbenstopp® correctly?

After the initial application with ADELE Milbenfrei® has taken place and the treated areas have dried, treatment with GUSTAV Milbenstopp® follows. GUSTAV Milbenstopp® is a hygroscopic, gel-like liquid; it does not dry out and forms an insurmountable barrier. It is applied to walkways, perch resting areas, as well as cracks and hiding places. GUSTAV Milbenstopp® is an insurmountable obstacle for mites. The remaining mites crawling out of their hiding places can no longer reach the chickens at night and die upon contact with Gustav.

5. Can I use ADELE & GUSTAV in occupied coops?

Yes. Both products are purely organic and biocide-free, so they can be used without hesitation in occupied coops – without removing animals, without chemical residues. This saves time and reduces stress for your poultry.

6. How often should I repeat the application?

Repetition after 7–14 days is recommended, depending on the infestation. Regular monitoring and a preventive GUSTAV barrier ensure long-term success for a mite-free coop.

7. What advantages do your products have over other mite control agents?
  • Organic / Biocide-free: no chemical biocides, residue-free.
  • 2-phase system: ADELE = immediate effect, GUSTAV = long-term protection.
  • In occupied coops: easy application without emptying the coop.
  • No resistance risk: physical mode of action.
  • For hobby & commercial use: scalable and practical.

8. How quickly do red mites reproduce?

Under favorable conditions, the cycle from egg to adult mite takes only 7–14 days. Early treatment is crucial.

9. Can mites also infest humans or pets?

They primarily infest poultry. In case of heavy infestation, they can temporarily bite humans or pets. Thorough coop treatment with ADELE + GUSTAV effectively prevents this.

Small coops: 5-10 liters of ADELE and 1.2 liters of ready-to-use GUSTAV are often sufficient. For large commercial coops, we recommend 10 L ADELE concentrate + 10 liters GUSTAV. No comprehensive treatment necessary
– very economical & efficient.
