Red Mite: Significance, Impact, and Key Challenges

The red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) is a common yet complex parasite in poultry farming. An infestation not only affects animal welfare but can also have economic consequences for farms. Since mites primarily feed on animals at night and hide in cracks, crevices, and technical transitions during the day, infestations often go unnoticed in practice at first.

Animal Welfare and Modern Housing Systems

In recent years, numerous measures have been implemented to improve animal welfare – including the transition from traditional housing systems to alternative, more complex stable facilities. This development is an important step forward. At the same time, the additional structure in the stable (e.g., transitions, edges, cavities) can offer more hiding places for mites. This makes it easier for infestations to establish, and conventional, purely superficial treatments do not always reliably reach the relevant areas.

Rapid Reproduction and Difficult Detection

The development cycle of the red mite – depending on temperature and environment – often takes between 7 days and about 2 weeks. Under favorable conditions, an infestation can therefore intensify significantly within a short period. Control is additionally complicated because mites can survive for longer periods without a blood meal and primarily reside in hard-to-reach stable areas.

Impact on Animal Health and Performance

A more severe infestation is often associated with itching, skin irritation, and pain and can cause restlessness in the flock. In severe cases, anemia can occur; heavy infestations can mean significant nocturnal blood loss. In practice, correlations are also observed with:

  • Decreased performance (e.g., egg-laying performance)

  • Lower weight gain

  • Immunosuppression and increased susceptibility

  • Increased mortality

  • Impaired eggshell quality

Transmission Routes between Flocks

Red mites can be carried between flocks via transport crates, clothing, wild birds, conveyor technology, and other contact routes. Therefore, operational procedures, hygiene, and monitoring play a central role in prevention.

Limitations of Conventional Control (Practical Aspects)

In practice, several challenges are described for chemical or conventional approaches:

  • Partially no application in occupied stables or waiting periods

  • Short residual effect, so not all mites are reached

  • Often limited effect on eggs, which can lead to re-infestation after hatching

  • Reports of resistance development

  • Workload and potential user risks

Classification

Against this background, there is a great need for effective, practical, and responsible strategies for controlling the red mite. A systematic approach is usually crucial, which considers hiding places/hotspots and aligns repetitions with the development cycle – supplemented by stable hygiene, monitoring, and prevention.
